Walkway Lighting

Walkway LightingWhether you are looking to illuminate your backyard for an elegant retreat feel, or if you just need some lighting for your front walkway, you will find that the most influential piece of décor to set the mood. At night, it’s also a very effective safety measure so you can see that skateboard waiting for you before the front door.

Your first step should be determining a budget for your lighting project, in combination with drawing a plan that details your lightning needs, and quantity. Once you decide how much money you want to spend and where you need the lights, it is time to figure out how to install them. The safest and easiest way to add lighting to your path is to hire an electrician or contractor (unless you decide to go with solar stakes from a home improvement store which can be set with one fairly easy push into soft soil).

Low Voltage Walkway Lights

You first consideration would be how much light you want? If you want bright light installed which covers a larger area than voltage lighting is the way to go. They are reliable and will always shine and are not dependent on the weather conditions like it is with solar lights. It is still the most popular option to opt in for and that is probably a reason why there are so many different sizes, styles and designs to choose from. The designer does not have to take anything in account like it is with solar lights and that is why voltage lights are available in more exclusive designs.

The cons on using voltage lighting are that it is very hard to install the lights yourself. If you don’t know how to install wires and how to work with electricity than you better not do it yourself. Another con  is that your outdoor lighting will add up on your electricity bill.

Solar Walkway Lights

Going solar  is going green because solar lights do no harm against the environment and that’s a good thing. The reason why they have become so popular is a totally other thing. They are popular mainly because they are really easy to install. You don’t have to connect any wires, all you have to do is stick the lamp in the ground and face the solar collector to the sun. Although the initial price of solar lights is often higher than voltage lighting, you will earn that back on your electricity bill because theses lights don’t use electricity.

Conclusion

Walkway lighting can enhance the beauty of your landscape as well as provide clear visibility when walking at night. By placing the lights every three to five feet along a walkway you will have plenty of light by which to see after dark.  These lights will also make any ornamental plants more visible and extend your enjoyment of them in the hours after sunset.

Outdoor lighting is not only beautiful and effective, it is also a good security measure. Thieves are less likely to target a well lit house. This being said, lights on path ways are good, but the airport runway look and strobe lighting will not only look terrible, but annoy the neighbors as well. With outdoor lighting, less tends to be more. Because of the endless variety and large impact lighting can have, it is very common to consult a designer when implementing lighting solutions for walkways and outdoor areas.
